Work, school, family, friends, volunteer activities; life has a way of getting busy. I sometimes find it difficult to make healthy choices, as I rush from point A to point B, while hurrying to finish one project and move on to the next. At times I’m guilty of grabbing whatever food option is most convenient, and usually have regrets after the fact. I tell myself that I’ll burn it off in my workout, but more often than not at the end of the day I find myself too exhausted, both physically and mentally, to add on one more activity, even though I am fully aware of the benefits of exercising regularly.
I needed to find an exercise routine that worked for me. I was having trouble motivating myself, and the typical workouts just weren’t resonating. On a whim, I decided to join a hot yoga (Bikram Yoga) class. It sounded strange and intimidating to me at first - practicing yoga in a room heated to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with complete strangers - but it didn’t take long for me to become completely hooked. I found it to be a workout unlike any other that I had previously experienced; it had the relaxing benefits of yoga coupled with the feeling of an intense cardio workout. I’ve been attending classes 4 days a week for the past few months and have noticed a real difference not only in the way I feel physically, but also in the manner in which I approach the tasks and challenges which present themselves each day.
Although life has a tendency to get hectic, and there never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done, it is important to take care of YOU! Hot yoga isn’t for everyone, but setting some time aside for yourself is essential if you are to be your best. Make yourself and your health a priority; it is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and those in your life.
